Oil and Gas Event in Refurbished College Breaks Attendance Record

Last year’s record attendance was broken at Banff and Buchan College’s annual Oil and Gas Event on Thursday 16th February. Over 900 delegates attended the event which was, for the first time, held in the atrium of the newly refurbished College building in Fraserburgh. As well as being able to speak to College staff, guests were able to chat to representatives from leading Oil and Gas companies including Vroon Offshore, ACE Winches, Springtech, Genesis Recruitment, ECITB, Technip UK Ltd, Schlumberger, Falck Nutec, Gray & Adams, Score Group, Wood Group, Enermech, Halliburton, and AMEC. Success for Electrical Student

Ross Borland, a student at Banff and Buchan College has excelled in a prestigious UK competition - SkillELECTRIC. Ross Borland from Banff who now works for Claud Hamilton Electrical Services competed against his peers to be nominated as the best student in the College, he then went on to win the North Consortium of the SkillELECTRIC competition. Ross was then awarded first place at the Scottish heat and so he went on to the UK final where he was Highly Commended in the 2011 Championship. Richard Lochhead MSP visits new College

MSP Richard Lochhead visited Banff and Buchan College in Fraserburgh today to see progress of the College 2012 refurbishment programme. Mr Lochhead, who is the Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs and the Environment spent time with the Class 2 Deck Officer (Mates) fishing students who had come from all areas of the UK and Ireland to study at the College. The VSA North Aberdeenshire Carers Rights Day event was held in November at the Buchanhaven Hearts Football Club in Peterhead this year. The theme for the day was Money Matters and organisations were invited to attend to talk to the unpaid carers from North Aberdeenshire.  A number of agencies were on hand to offer advice and those attending included: Alzheimer’s Scotland, Aberdeenshire’s Shared Lives, Aberdeenshire Council Welfare Rights Workers, NESCU, Housability, Care and Repair, Pension Service and Banff and Buchan College. Banff and Buchan College Success in Hairdressing Competition

Students from the Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy department at Banff and Buchan College have excelled in a Scottish Wide Competiton. Student Natalie Gaydyalene took 1st Place in the Ladies Evening Style category and also took 3rd Place in the Men's Commercial Style category. College Charity Raises Money for Moldovan Orphanages

Students studying Access to Social Sciences at Banff and Buchan College raised £680 cash in a collection for the Stella’s House charity in Moldova and its parent charity The New Hope Trust in Peterhead. The charity initiative across the College included a car wash and one student dyed his hair pink and raised £180 of sponsorship. The Access to Social Sciences group also held a Christmas shoeboxes collection, collecting health care items, clothing and food for the orphanages in Moldova. Banff and Buchan College and Aberdeen Foyer have signed a collaborative Agreement. This agreement will see the two organisations work together to provide training and education in accordance with SFC/ESF Investing in Skills for Economic Recovery. The organisations will initially provide three programmes in Aberdeen called ‘Get into Retail’. These courses will aim to give individuals the skills and experience they need to secure a job in the retail industry. The course will last for 5 weeks and will include a two week placement. The SVQ Level 2 Beauty Therapy students at the Macduff Learning Centre tore a strip of their clients – all in the name of charity!  Seven “willing” volunteers allowed students to wax their legs with all the proceeds going to Children in Need.  The friends and partners of the students were sponsored to have their legs waxed and raised a yowling £530. Even Pudsey took some time off on Friday 18th November to have his hair and nails done!  The busy bear went to the Huntly Learning Centre where pupils from Kemnay Academy were fund raising for Children in Need. College 2012 Project Nears Completion

Banff and Buchan College’s 2012 redevelopment project is nearing completion with stage 1 and 2 now commissioned and in full operation. Stage 1 saw the new atrium opened to students with increased social space, a new refectory, new library and resource centre and a new front entrance to the College. An annual ‘Go Pink’ fundraising event was held at Banff and Buchan College on 28th October 2011 and has raised over £350 for breast cancer research. Staff were able to purchase home baked pieces of cakes and muffins generously donated by the College staff.
