Preparing to Care Banff & Buchan College
Posted on 19, Dec 2011
The Prepare to Care course is in partnership with Banff & Buchan College and Jobcentre Plus. The course prepares a student for employment in the Care industry and the Macduff Learning Centre was the venue for the latest course.
This five week Training for Work course was in partnership with Jobcentre Plus and Banff & Buchan College and the course provided vocational training support for people aged 18 or over who are actively looking for work. The programme allows people to undertake vocational training linked to local labour market opportunities, enabling individuals to secure and sustain employment.
Karen Campbell – Personal Advisor with Jobcentre Plus said “The students from this short course have gained confidence, knowledge and certificates that will help them towards their goal of getting back to work. Two have already been offered jobs and I look forward to the others being employed in the near future. They worked well together and with their tutors to gain as much as possible from the course”
The students learned about personal care and how to care for someone with a range of needs, including nutrition, medication and how to deal with people who have challenging behaviour. They also learned about dementia and how it affects individuals and those who care for them and the values that they would need to work in care, e.g. Confidentiality, patience and discretion. Qualifications were also gained on this course, which included certificates in Elementary Food Hygiene, Working Safely and Safer People Handling awareness.
The students had a work experience placement in a care setting and they felt that participation in this course had benefited them hugely and that they had been given the opportunity to find out more about themselves and whether they are suited to a job in care. They also felt that the qualifications they had gained were relevant to the type of work and would benefit them in the long term.
Gary Urquhart – Training for Work co-ordinator with Banff & Buchan College said “It is vital that the college has positive working relationships with agencies such as Job Centre Plus and local employers. The Prepare to Care course has been specifically designed to meet the training requirements of employers in the care sector. These courses allow candidates the opportunity to learn new skills and with a placement in a care setting included they have the benefit of putting their learning into practice”
Jobcentre Plus and Banff & Buchan College are delighted with the success of these courses and if there are any local employers who have any vacancies in the care industry then contact the Jobcentre Plus office in Banff as they have the customers who are now trained and ready to go!
